Pinewood Derby Car Designs: Blocks, Wheels, Decals, Nails And Weights

Cub Scouts often look forward to the pinewood derby. The Cub Scouts are given blocks of pinewood that have two notches for wheels, four plastic wheels and four nails. The finished car the Cub Scout will assemble has to make use of all the pieces, but must not exceed a specified weight, must not be longer than the specified length, and most importantly, the car must be able to fit on the track where it will be used.

The Cub Scout will usually need the help of a parent when building the car. Weights need to be put on the car, the nails must be drilled into place, and the blocks must be carved and shaped into an aerodynamic design so that the car will run smoother on the lanes.

Aside from building the car, Cub Scouts often take the initiative to design them. Pinewood derby car designs vary from being just unfinished blocks, to having whimsical designs, to being replicas of real cars. It's really up to the creativity and imagination of the Cub Scout to design his own pinewood derby. Sometimes, in the event of the pinewood derby, the Cub Scouts with the best pinewood derby car designs are also awarded.

One thing that the kids have to keep in mind, though, is that before they do their pinewood derby car designs, they have to make sure that the car will run smoothly. Weights are often added to the rear of the car in order to bring it to the maximum weight allowed, and it's best to make the car's length as long as the rules allow. Weights make the car heavier, which will make it run faster on the lanes. The nails must also be drilled into the car just right. The nails must not be too tight so they don't hinder the wheels from turning, but they must not be too loose so that the wheels wobble.

Once the pinewood derby cars have already been carved and shaped, the pinewood derby car designs will then have to be made. Cub Scouts can paint the car and add decals to create their own unique pinewood derby car designs. Painting the car is supposed to be done entirely by the kid and the parent should let him choose the colors he wants, as well as additional pinewood derby car designs he'd like to add to the car. Kids usually have fun using stars, scout symbols, happy faces, or pretty much anything that strikes their fancy for pinewood derby car designs.

Utilizing a set of decals can also be a good way of doing pinewood derby car designs. Kids usually enjoy applying the decals, and doing so gives the car a finished look. Kids are often proud of their own pinewood derby car designs. Building and the pinewood derby car designs are things that most Cub Scouts do with gusto. Once these tasks are both done, they will surely look forward to the pinewood derby event. Not only will they get to build their own toy car, they will also feel that thrill of excitement while watching their own pinewood derby car designs race to the finish line.
