Pinewood Derby Car Kit: BSA, Wheels, Axles, Blocks And Prices

There is no doubt the pinewood derby is one of the most awaited events of the Cub Scouts. Aside from the race itself, the kids also look forward to building their car with the help of their parents. Pinewood derby cars are constructed from blocks of pinewood, wheels and axles. All these can be found in a BSA pinewood derby car kit. The price of a pinewood derby car kit depends on the pieces included. There are some kits with prices of just $4, and there are some with prices of as high as $30.

Complete cars can be purchased over the Internet, but purchasing these violates the spirit of the event. Purchasing complete cars will also rob kids of the chance to build their own cars and feel proud of their creation. The complete cars may be more attractive in design and workmanship, but nothing beats the thrill of creating a pinewood derby car by getting one's own pinewood derby car kit.

In getting a pinewood derby car kit, one should make sure it is a BSA car kit. Parts such as blocks and more that do not come from these kits should not be used as substitutes when one is making a pinewood derby car. This practice can be considered illegal in most races. The player who substitutes parts not from BSA kits can get disqualified.

The blocks that come with a pinewood derby car kit should be cut by the parents; kids often have a hard time when it comes to doing this task. The axles found in the pinewood derby car kit should be fitted just right into the car. If the axles are too tight, the wheels will turn slower, and vice versa. One can also find a pinewood derby car kit that already includes weights to make the car heavier. Making the car heavier is important because the car will be relying only on gravity to push it down the lane and across the finish line.

A pinewood derby car kit does not have to be bought only when the annual pinewood derby is about to be held. Making a pinewood derby car is not only for Cub Scouts, but for adults as well. Many people enjoy building pinewood derby cars just as a hobby or pastime.

One thing that parents should also keep in mind is that rules governing races may differ from one pack to another. If their son is going to compete at the district or council level, they should make sure the car is built according to the committee's rules, or else he might be disqualified. If the pinewood derby car does not fit the requirements stated by the rules of the race, then their son will be disqualified. To avoid this, they would have to purchase a new pinewood derby car kit and have fun building and designing another car.
