Pinewood Derby Tools: Sandpaper, Super Glue, Putty And Coping Saw

Building a winning pinewood derby car is a challenge for every Cub Scout and the rest of the people who help with completing a design. Although the focus of a pinewood derby event is the race or competition itself, the primary challenge lies on the construction of a stylish yet functional pinewood derby car. Since Cub Scouts are free to design and customize their pinewood derby kits, these miniature racecars can take the form of mini Ferraris, police cars, vintage cars and other unique designs.

Cub racers need some materials in order to accurately create these unique pinewood derby car designs. These common materials are needed in order to properly construct a safe, fast pinewood derby car.

Being one of the most common construction and home improvement tools, sandpaper is inexpensive and readily available in hardware stores and home improvement shops. Racers should always have stocks of sandpaper sheets, since they are used to sand pinewood blocks or finish a pinewood derby car body before painting. Aside from sanding and finishing, sandpaper comes handy for smoothing out uneven edges and chips after a race.

The super glue is another common household and hardware material useful in constructing pinewood derby cars. Although a commercial glue works fine, racers might want to ask some hobby shops and online stores if they have super glue especially for pinewood derby construction. Although super glue is commonly used to secure axles and weights, it is now widely used for attaching accessories and custom car parts such as bumpers, spoilers, rollbars, fenders, windshields and exhaust pipes.

The body putty is often used to fill up scratches, gaps, rasp marks and cuts caused during construction, or impacts during races. Aside from this, the putty is also ideal for adding custom features such as fins, bumps and spoilers to a pinewood derby car. It can also be used to make a smooth finish for the car body. Since the putty is non-toxic and comes with a spatula, it is safe for use and handling by children.

The coping saw is a kind of hand saw used for cutting intricate and curvy shapes and designs for wood works and carpentry. There are several types, each designed for cutting a certain material: fine saw blades, which are used to cut wood and plastic; medium saw blades, which are used to cut wood; hacksaw blades, which are used to cut metal; and other types of fine saw blades used to cut both metals and wood. Beginners are advised to use medium coping saw blades for shaping their pinewood derby cars. Parents and adults should remember to supervise over construction using a saw, as it can be very dangerous for children to handle sharp tools.

These are just some of the basic materials commonly used in building and designing pinewood derby cars. Racers may need other tools for more intricate and detailed derby car designs. Some of this equipment can cause serious injury, so children should always make sure that they ask the help of adults when building derby cars.
